The Next Decade of Australia’s Seniors Housing Starts in This Room

Australia’s population is ageing faster than its retirement housing supply can keep pace.

The number of Australians aged 65 and over is projected to double to 9.7 million within four decades, while CBRE forecasts a shortfall of more than 40,000 retirement village units by 2030.

Capital has noticed. In the past year The Living Company completed its $3.85-billion acquisition of Aveo and Invesco acquired RetireAustralia for $845 million.

Demand rising, supply lagging, capital in the market. The people working through it will be in one room next month.

The Urban Developer’s Retirement and Aged Care Summit returns to The Calile Hotel, Brisbane on Thursday, September 3, bringing together more than 200 C-suite professionals from across retirement living and aged care for a day of keynotes, panels, project showcases and networking.

Here is a look at what is on the program.

How the major players are approaching the next decade

Levande chief executive Kevin McCoy leads one of Australia’s largest retirement living providers, with a national portfolio of 59 villages serving about 11,000 residents.

He joins Village Retirement Group chief executive Simon Forsyth to unpack the strategic playbook for the decade ahead.

The developer’s perspective

Regis executive general manager of property Georgia Willis oversees the land acquisitions, new developments and refurbishments driving the aged care provider’s national growth strategy.

She joins YPM managing director Bryce O’Connor to examine how developers are underwriting new projects in the current economic environment.

Inside the sector’s best projects

Hyecorp co-managing director and head of development Stephen Abolakian and Aveo head of development Geoff Robinson go inside two of the sector’s standout projects: Hyecorp’s Hyegrove and HyeCare projects at Willoughby, and Aveo’s Bella Vista Haven.

The numbers behind the sector

Stewart Brown’s Stuart Hutcheon presents the Retirement Living Performance Sector Report, drawing on financial and operational data from 85 operators covering more than 600 villages.

Rothelowman will also present a design case study on creating communities for 4 to 104-year-olds.

In conversation: Stephen Gaitanos

The day builds to an extended conversation with The Living Company co-founder Stephen Gaitanos, fresh from the group’s $3.85 billion acquisition of Aveo, on building one of the sector’s fastest-growing platforms.

On the agenda across the day: demand outlook, supply pipeline, policy reform, capital flows, feasibility, care models and design.
